Spirulina Spirulina is a blue green algae that is a single celled organism from the phylum Cyanobacteria. Spirulina was traditionally harvested as a food source by the Aztecs up until the 16th century. Nowadays, spirulina is dried into a fine powder and added as a superfood to smoothies or cereal. At Loving Earth, we have combined it into our Rainbow mix to create a balanced superfood blend.
Wheatgrass Wheatgrass comes from the cotyledons (a portion of the embryo inside the seed) of the young grass from the common wheat plant, Triticum Aestivum. Typically, wheatgrass is sold and distributed in the format of a fine light green powder or is extracted into a juice.
The historical uses of wheatgrass originated in ancient Egypt over 5000 years ago, where the leaves of the young wheat plant were cultivated and consumed for their affects on health and vitality. Thousands of years later, in 1930 wheatgrass became the subject of research conducted by Charles F Schnabel. And in 1940, Schnabel made the first powdered wheatgrass product available for sale in America.
Today, wheatgrass continues to be a highly nutritious wholefood when added to cereals, into smoothies or juices.
